Swim Team Committee

MISSION STATEMENT
The Somerset Swim Team is an important part of the community. It brings neighbors together in an enjoyable outdoor activity both at Swim Meets & at the many social functions that the team sponsors. The team is meant to be an activity that is fun & beneficial for kids with a wide range of swimming abilities & experience. Many kids who are not very fast swimmers enjoy participating in the team year after year & are encouraged to do so, for both the athletic & social benefits. The team also offers opportunities for excellent swimmers. The MCSL league to which our team belongs is the second-largest summer league in the country, with top swimmers. Our best swimmers get to compete in all-star meets with other top swimmers in the county. The happiest swimmers are usually those who concentrate on improving their own times, & who get excited to watch their progress rather than focusing on how fast or slow they are compared to other swimmers.

CHARTER

The Somerset Dolphins is a summer swim team from Chevy Chase, Maryland that competes in the Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL). Our team is open to Town of Somerset residents, ages 6 to 18 (by June 1st), who can pass the deep water test (swim two lengths of the 25M pool & tread water for 30 seconds). The team practices every afternoon after Memorial Day & each morning after the school year ends.

Competitive dual A Swim Meets occur every Saturday morning during the 6-week competition season from mid-June through July. B-Meets are held Wednesday evenings during the season. The team also participates in two all-Division events: Relay Carnival & Divisionals. The season ends after Divisionals with a Team Banquet where swimmers receive trophies and celebrate the season. Qualifying swimmers are invited to participate in All-Stars the weekend after Divisionals. We also host social events throughout the season. The goal of the swim team is simple: have fun, make friends, & create memories.

Meets & Practices: A-Meets will be every Saturday morning from June 15, 2024–July 20, 2024. Time Trials will be on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Practices will begin on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 (the day after Memorial Day) & run Monday through Friday in the afternoons (except when we have B meets on Wednesday afternoons). After the MCPS school year ends, we will hold practices on weekdays in both the morning & the afternoon. B meets will be every Wednesday early evening, beginning June 12, 2024. These meets will also serve as time trials for swimmers to qualify for A-Meets.

Minis Program: For children who cannot pass the deep-water test, there is a separate, learn-to-swim program that is not affiliated with MCSL, the Minis. Mini swimmers must be between 4 and 7 years old by June 1st and be able to put their face underwater. They practice four days a week (M, Tu, Th, F) after school is out. There is also one Mini meet, & Minis who are ready can move up to the team & compete in B meets during the season. Mini swimmers represent the future vitality of the swim team & are encouraged to attend all the swim team social/spirit events.

Social Events: We put together a great calendar of fun social activities throughout the swim season for our Dolphins and Minis! The social calendar is really the heart of the Swim Team & Minis programs, strengthening the connections our kids and families have in the Town of Somerset community.

Spirit Wear: Order your Dolphins gear in advance of the start of the season.

We are looking forward to ensuring our Somerset Dolphins have a unique & rewarding summer swim season they will remember for years to come.
