TENNIS
COURT REGULATIONS
ADOPTED BY MAYOR and COUNCIL
TOWN OF SOMERSET
Adopted by Town Council,
11/4/02
1.
Town tennis courts are for the exclusive use of
Somerset residents, houseguests, employees and
close relatives (parents, children, children-in-law
and grandchildren) of residents and employees.
The courts are also open to guests playing with
any of the above.
2. Courts are for tennis only and may not be used
for any other purpose. Roller skates, skateboards,
scooters, bicycles, etc. are strictly prohibited.
3. Tennis players must wear tennis shoes with
rubber soles and no heels. (Hard shoes will scratch
surface, permitting water to erode courts.)
4. Players may use the courts only one hour a
day unless no one is waiting to play. This applies
at all times to players of all ages except from
7 to 9 a.m. on weekends and holidays (see Regulation
6 (b)). (The one-hour time limit would not preclude
playing again during the day as a last-minute
replacement.)
5. On weekdays the courts may not be reserved
before 8 a.m. or at 2, 3, or 4 p.m., except by
players 16 years old and younger, who may reserve
at noon, 1, 2 and 3 p.m. During no-reservation
periods play is on a first-come basis irrespective
of age.
6. (a) At all other hours on weekdays and all
day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays the courts
may be reserved by members 16 or older, who, if
they wish may play with children and/or guests.
(b) Reservations are for one hour only, singles
or doubles, except that two member households
may reserve a court for singles or doubles from
7 to 9 a.m. on weekends and holidays.
(c) Except for (b) above, on weekends and holidays
each household is limited to one hour of reserved
time a day. During the week, however, two residents
of the same household may reserve courts, one
between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the other at or
after 5 p.m.
(d) Reservations start on the hour and are void
if not used by 10 minutes after the hour.
(e) Residents under 16, houseguests and close
relatives of members may not reserve courts except
as permitted by Regulation 5, above. If a court
is not in use during reservation periods, residents
over 16 and employees who are waiting to play
take precedence over younger residents, houseguests
and close relatives. However, younger players,
houseguests and close relatives need not relinquish
a court for residents 16 or older or employees
unless the latter have reserved the court before
the start of the hour and appear by 10 minutes
after the hour.
7. To discourage ineligible persons from using
the courts, a player in each game must take the
following two steps before starting play, whether
or not reservations have been made:
(a) Sign name and street on marker board to left
of entrance, and
(b) Display valid Somerset tennis identification
card on clip inside fence. The only exception
to this requirement is that residents under 16
may play during non-sign-up hours without an ID
card.
8. Only one group lesson (two or more students)
is permitted at one time except on weekdays between
noon and 4 p.m. Only court 1 or 3 may be utilized,
and user should specify “group lesson”
on reservation sign-up sheet.
NOTE: No rules can cover every eventuality.
Therefore, the Mayor and Council hope that residents
will observe the spirit of the regulations so
that as many residents as possible may enjoy the
facilities.
