Here you can find out what the Town of Somerset is all about!

WHO WE ARE

We are a small community in Chevy Chase, Maryland located conveniently between Bethesda & Friendship Heights near the border with our nation's capital. The Town of Somerset has a long history, dating back to the late 1800s when it was primarily farmland in Norwood Park. In the past 125+ years, our Town has undergone a significant transformation, both in development & in our residents from farmland, to a streetcar community, & now a picturesque Town.

Somerset is represented by an elected Mayor & five-person Town Council who govern the Town, & a small staff, supported by several consultants to ensure the provision of a variety of services to our residents. Our town motto is, “Where People & Trees Have Deep Roots & Grow Strong."

Somerset is known for its park-like setting within an urban area. Somerset Elementary School, the Somerset Pool, the Walter J. Behr Tennis Courts, & Town Hall are centers of activity that contribute to the Town’s strong sense of community. Somerset is conveniently located, & within walking distance to the Washington Metro's Red Line through the Friendship Heights Metro Station & has access to bus service through Friendship Heights.

The Town is just steps away from the Capital Crescent Trail. This trail follows an abandoned railroad right of way & extends 11 miles from Georgetown in the District of Columbia to Silver Spring in Montgomery County. The trail, one of 500 rail-to-trail projects in the nation, traverses neighborhoods & parkland & includes stretches along the Potomac River. Bikers, walkers, & serious hikers all enjoy use of the trail.

The Montgomery County Council published a video on Somerset "Neighborhood Niches #2 - Somerset" with the description reading "In this episode we visit Wheaton, Maryland & learn about some of the unique offerings of the community, & what the future has in store for this urban center. We then stop by the tiny Town of Somerset. Located right on the DC border this bucolic community has just over 400 homes in one quarter square mile." You can watch the video here.
